The polite present: -아요 / -어요
Take the dictionary form, remove -다 to get the stem, then:
- last vowel ㅏ or ㅗ → add -아요: 받다 → 받아요, 좋다 → 좋아요
- any other vowel → add -어요: 먹다 → 먹어요, 읽다 → 읽어요
- 하다 → 해요: 공부하다 → 공부해요
When the stem ends in a vowel, the vowels merge: 가다 → 가요, 보다 → 봐요, 마시다 → 마셔요, 주다 → 줘요, 배우다 → 배워요.
The object: 을 / 를
을 after a consonant, 를 after a vowel: 밥*을 먹어요*, 커피*를 마셔요*.
Asking for things
Noun + 주세요 = "please give me": 물 주세요.
