After a subordinating conjunction the conjugated verb moves to the end of the clause:
- Ik blijf thuis. → Ik blijf thuis omdat ik ziek ben.
- Ik denk dat hij morgen komt.
- Bel me als je tijd hebt.
Common subordinators: omdat (because), dat (that), als (if, when), wanneer (when), terwijl (while), hoewel (although), voordat (before), nadat (after), zodat (so that), of (whether), totdat (until), sinds (since).
With several verbs, they cluster at the end: …omdat ik morgen moet werken. / …omdat ik gisteren heb gewerkt.
If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb (verb-second rule): Als het regent, blijf ik thuis.
