The present tense
Take the infinitive, remove -en: that is the stem and the ik form.
| werken (to work) | |
|---|---|
| ik | werk |
| jij / u / hij / zij | werkt |
| wij / jullie / zij | werken |
Spelling rules keep the sound the same:
- A long vowel in an open syllable is written double in the stem: maken → ik maak, eten → ik eet.
- A doubled consonant becomes single: zitten → ik zit, bakken → ik bak.
- Dutch words never end in v or z: leven → ik leef, lezen → ik lees.
- A stem ending in t doesn't get an extra t: ik zit, hij zit.
Lekker (tasty, nice) is one of the most used Dutch words: Eet smakelijk! is "enjoy your meal".
